Change Your Motoring Habits and Save Money
1. Try not to allow your car to warm up for long periods. In colder mornings 30 to 45 seconds is an ample amount of time.
2. Once the engine has warmed up, double check to make sure the automatic choke is disengaged. More times then not, they will be stuck and as a result, you will have bad gas and air mixture.
3. Keep in mind that allowing your car to idle for 1 minute uses the same amount of gas as it would to start it again. Therefore, if you were just going to get out checking the mail for example it would be best to leave the car running.
4. Revving your engine right before you shut it off wastes fuel and results in oil being washed down from the inside of the cylinder walls this results in loss of oil pressure.
5. Check the owner’s manual for your vehicle recommended maintenance schedule. Replacing the air filter is necessary for saving gas. A clean air filter not only allows your car to run better, it will also increase your gas mileage.
6. Check the suspension and chassis parts for misalignment every so often. Twisted wheels, axles, bad shocks, and broken springs can produce engine drag and is unsafe when travelling at high speeds.
7. Keep all your tires inflated to the maximum limit. At regular intervals, you should have your tires periodically spun, balanced and checked. When searching for new tires the larger diameter tires for rear wheels are best. Radial designs are well known for fuel saving. Once you have purchased new tires check the manufactures recommendations for the maximum tire pressure.
8. Remove any extra weight from the trunk or inside of your car such as extra tires, back seats, anything extremely heavy and unnecessary. Any extra weight in your car will reduce your gas mileage, especially when driving up inclines.
